Low-cost radar with beamforming

A project to highlight some of the most important security concerns has recently been completed.

EPSI, a French-based company that specializes in advanced radar and surveillance system design, set out to develop a new generation of radar (FMCW type) capable of detecting moving targets on land, at sea, and in the air (including drones) with a 1-kilometre range and reliable performance in all weather conditions. To achieve this, they partnered with CISTEME, an RF engineering company that focuses on high-performance front-end and antenna solutions, and WUPATEC to build a fully integrated, high-performance solution.

WUPATEC’s role was to provide the digital backbone of the radar. This involved selecting and designing the FPGA architecture, implementing beamforming capabilities, and developing the data acquisition, transmitter synchronization, and high-speed data transfer needed for real-time processing. Combined with CISTEME’s RF and antenna expertise, the result is a robust 3D detection radar platform built for the demands of modern surveillance.

This collaboration showcases the strength of a local French technology ecosystem. EPSI brought the system vision and mission requirements, CISTEME designed the RF front-end, and WUPATEC delivered the digital and signal-processing core that enables precise detection and reliable performance.

Together, the three partners created a state-of-the-art solution that supports the protection of critical infrastructure and addresses emerging security challenges.
