At the ESTER technology park in Limoges, the collaboration between three leading companies has enabled the launch of a new generation of radar systems capable of accurately detecting small moving targets in a one-kilometer radius, regardless of climatic or environmental conditions. French companies EPSI, CISTEME, and WUPATEC have worked together to bring this ambitious project to life.
The challenge
EPSI envisioned a radar system capable of detecting threats in the air, on land, and at sea with exceptional precision. « The detection of drones has become a strategic priority in all surveillance systems, particularly for sensitive and complex areas, » explained Frédéric Chaumeil, CEO of EPSI. This innovation addresses the growing demand for solutions to protect critical sites such as nuclear power plants, airbases, and naval zones. The system needed to operate reliably in all weather conditions, offering 3D detection capabilities within a one-kilometer range. Overcoming challenges such as energy efficiency, system performance optimization, and adaptability for multiple applications was key to achieving these goals.
Wupatec's contribution
WUPATEC designed the digital side of the radar that featured beamforming capabilities. This required the FPGA selection, development of a hardware system (added to the FPGA), and definition of all FPGA connections. Functions such as channel acquisition, transmitter synchronization, and data transfer to an external processor were also developed by WUPATEC. This all led to:
- Seamless Beamforming Integration: By designing the digital hardware and connections, the radar could accurately shape and steer its beams for precise threat detection.
- Reliable Data Processing: The development of channel acquisition and transmitter synchronization functions enabled smooth and synchronized radar operations.
- Efficient Data Handling: With advanced data transfer mechanisms to external processors, the radar system could process and analyze data quickly and efficiently.
Colaborative Success
This project highlights the strength of collaboration within the French technological ecosystem. EPSI provided visionary leadership, guiding the project from concept to realization. CISTEME designed the overall radar system, including the RF hardware (RF front end) and antennas, ensuring a robust and high-performing platform. Meanwhile, WUPATEC focused on the digital aspects, guaranteeing seamless integration and functionality. Together, a revolutionary product was developed.
Looking ahead
The new 3D detection radars represent a significant advancement in safeguarding critical infrastructures. At WUPATEC, this achievement reflects our commitment to pushing the boundaries of RF technology and supporting efforts in industrial relocalization and national sovereignty. We look forward to future collaborations that drive innovation and deliver impactful solutions.
